It’s happening now. Open source is emerging to be a major stakeholder in the AI ecosystem.
Yesterday, France-based Mistral AI, a one-month-old open source AI solution, announced to bag $113 million in seed round at a valuation of $260 million from the likes of Lightspeed Ventures, Exor Ventures, First Minute Capital, Former Google CEO Eric Shmidt and others.
It’s an attempt by a researcher from DeepMind named Arthur Mensch, as well as former Meta AI scientists Timothée Lacroix and Guillaume Lample to challenge the hegemony of OpenAI. They have decided to build an open source AI solution that will “Make AI useful.” It plans to release its first models for text-based generative AI in 2024.
