Apple never ceases to surprise. As usual, the head-turners of this year’s worldwide developer conference – besides Craig Federight running in slow motion and fixing his hair– were the major software, hardware, and product updates.

Apple announced iOS 16, iPad OS 16, watchOS 9, and macOS Ventura. The Cupertino giant also revealed the new MacBook Air with a next-generation M2 chip.

M2 chip in a nutshell: The all-new, second-generation hardware is a successor of the M1 - ultra chip – claimed to be the world’s most powerful chip in a personal computer.

The M2 chip has nearly 20 billion transistors. In addition, the new chip comes with 24GB of high-performance unified memory, which can process up to 100GB/s of memory bandwidth – i.e. 50 percent more than the current M1 chip.

M2 offers 25 percent improved graphics performance at the same power level as the M1 chip and 25 percent improved performance at its maximum power output.

M2 is up to 35 percent faster than M1 on the graphics front. Apple users can now do everything from colour correcting photos to editing 4K and 8K videos at warp speed.

Hey Siri, you there?

Siri was conspicuously absent in the WWDC22 keynote.

“Apple released Siri in October 2011, and in mid-2022, I still have to repeat ‘Add X to the shopping list’ twice because the first time I get warned,’ I do not see an app for that,” said Alessandro Perilli, senior director – automation strategy at Red Hat.
