The European Union (EU) is rife with complicated data protection laws like GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) and have made it extremely difficult for ChatGPT, which is built on internet data, to operate smoothly in the region.
In May this year, members of European Parliaments (MEPs) adopted a draft that included bans on biometric surveillance, emotion recognition, and predictive policing AI systems. Amid this tug-of-war between OpenAI and the EU, Europe-based AI companies are building generative AI platforms complying with the EU’s data regulations.
In June, France-based Mistral AI raised $100 million led by Lightspeed Ventures. This announcement shocked many because the company was able to raise this massive funding without having released a single product. The highlight of Mistral AI was its three co-founders. Arthur Mensch was the lead contributor to the Retro, Flamingo, and Chinchilla projects, gaining valuable experience in optimising large language models. Guillaume Lample led the development of LLaMA along with Timothée Lacroix.
