Last year, when GitHub Copilot started picking up, there was a big legal question about whether Codex had the right to use the open-source code and if Copilot users could ethically use the code it writes. In November last year, a class-action lawsuit was filed in the US federal court challenging the legal use of GitHub Copilot and OpenAI Codex, alongside the violation of open-source licenses by GitHub, Microsoft and OpenAI.Â
Cut to present, generative AI companies like Midjourney and Stability AI, along with image-hosting platform DeviantArt have been slapped with a class-action lawsuit by three artists seeking compensation for damages caused by these companies in addition to a request to prevent ‘further harm’.Â
